Cycling New Zealand announces BMX Team

With only one spot available, 23-year-old Rebecca Petch has been selected by Cycling New Zealand for the 2020-1 Tokyo Olympics! Rebecca is a three-time BMX national champion and will be the only BMXer sent to represent New Zealand.

Petch, from Te Awamutu, has never been out of the medals at the elite national championships over the last seven years from the age of 16. A World Cup semifinalist twice last year and at the Baku World Championships in 2018. In addition to her strong performances during the qualification period, the Tokyo games will also help develop her potential for Paris 2024.” – cyclingnewzealand.nz

Rebecca Petch was selected over Sarah Walker, an Olympian at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Petch credits Walker for helping her achieve her Olympic dreams, stating:

I remember sitting at primary school when the Beijing Olympic Games were on and I remember watching Sarah on the big sreen and just thinking ‘I want that to be me one day’. Sarah has helped me through the years, she started a team up, helped me and helped me with a bike. To follow in her footsteps, it’s been a tough road but she’s been a big inspiration for me and so many other riders in the sport.” – www.rnz.co.nz
