27 Apr 2019 - UCI BMX Supercross World Cup - Round 1 GBR - Manchester Results

In the years that I've been following the Supercross World Cup tours, whenever a stop included Manchester, carnage was always guaranteed. Crashes happen all the time, but this track seems to be special, it's tight and doesn't allow room for mistakes.

In the semi-finals of round 1 on Saturday, Saya Sakakibara goes down on the first jump, the current world champion Laura Smulders' just on the inside of Alise Willoughby, somehow had her right foot trapped inside Willoughby's fork, causing both to crash.  In the other heat of the semi-finals, Merel Smulders goes down taking out Julia Alves dos Santos and Priscilla Andreia Stevaux Carnaval.

Finally, in the finals, Simone Christensen took it home with her first world cup win, followed by Judy Baauw for the two and Merle Van Benthem in third -  who just came back from surgery and a long rehab. Wow... What a huge upset for the finals in round 2. Alise Willougby was in the lead until the last berm, taking Laura Smulders off the track and clearing the way for French rider Manon Valentino, Natalia Afremova for the two and Ruby Huisman for the third. This is a big win for Valentino who last podiumed at the World Championships in Auckland in 2013. Watch the last lap for round 2 of the Elite Women's final here.
